BPhO Round 1 and 2

Here are some key details about this year’s contest.

  • Competition Date: Friday, 8th Nov 2024

  • Competition Date (for International Students): Monday 11th November 2024

    • Papers will be available on Saturday 9th Nov 2024.

  • Competition Details:

    • The paper is divided into two: Section 1 and Section 2

      • Section 1 consists of a set of short answers

      • Section 2 contains thematic questions that require longer answers

    • Exam length is 2 hours 40 minutes

    • Should be sat within your school

    • Scanned student scripts are uploaded to the BPhO office for marking

      • These should be returned (uploaded) for marking to BPhO by Friday 15th Nov 2024 


  • Cost: £18 per student (4 free papers for non-fee-paying schools). All subsequent rounds are free.

  • Prizes: Certificates. In the past, certificates have been awarded in around the following numbers:

    • 50 Top Gold

    • 100 Gold

    • 200 Silver

    • 300 Bronze I

    • 300 Bronze II

    • 1000 Commendations

  • Registration Process: Teachers must be the ones to register for their students. They must first make an account in BPhO’s Competitions platform. You can forward the BPhO Round 1 page to your teacher to help guide them in registering.


How can I get into the Round 2 of the BPhO?

Together with scoring high in Round 1, you also need to satisfy the eligibility criteria for Round 2 and the UK team. This means that you must be a UK citizen and must have studied most of your education in the UK. See more details here.
